going through files in a directory
hey, guys i just want to know how i can get through a folder and count the number of files that exist in that folder.

it should be something like this
"for file in directory...
do i++"
im new in scripting
btw im using a csh shell script that takes a directory as an argument

You do not implicitly need a loop for that:

$ ls | wc -l
      90

But if you want to do it with a loop, try this:

$ i=0
$ for f in *
do
i=`expr $i + 1`
done
$ echo $i
90
$

# 3  
Old 05-05-2010
And I think that pseudocoder is encouraging you to get away from "csh" as fast as possible and use a mainstream shell such as "ksh" "bash" or a POSIX "sh".
