The erroremail assignments should not be a problem. The logfile was intended to be able to store the results in a file. Your myemail.txt file has the same purpose. Either option is fine. I suggest defining the output file as a variable as it is easier to manage in the future.

LOGFILE=/tmp/myemail.txt

you can use either "| tee -a ${LOGFILE}" or ">>${LOGFILE}" to populate the log file. The only difference is the "tee -a" option also shows the content on the screen so you can see what's happening when you execute it. If you do not need to watch the progress, and since you are already familiar with the >> redirect, stick with that.

BTW, you listed two different files names for the output and the email content. I'm not sure if that was your intent if you plan to send the output as the body of the email.

Thanks again.

Having another problem.

Everytime I execute the script, the "myemail.txt" file gets updated instead of creating a new file with the execution. Yes the output file name was a typo.

Should there be something like this in the begining of the script:

Code:
REMOVE=${ls -1 /tmp rm myemail.txt}
CREATE=${ls -1 /tmp vi myemail.txt}

There is a line in the script that looks like this...

Code:
# Create or clear the log file
echo "" > ${LOGFILE}

Just change the destination to store your output file (i.e. /tmp/myemail.txt).

From my understanding, this is what you mean:

Code:
LOGFILE=${NOW}_FileCheck.log

I am thinking that since you have a "_", how would one put a directory path? Like this:

Code:
LOGFILE=${NOW}_/tmp/myemail.txt

is the LOGFILE in your script, actually capturing the entire output? if so, as you said, i can use the logfile instead of my 'myemail.txt' for the email purpose?

The output file can be whatever you want, either the example I provided or the myemail.txt file that you had listed. If you want to keep daily files, then use:
Quote:
LOGFILE=/tmp/${NOW}_myemail.txt
If you do not care about keeping old copies, then just use:
Quote:
LOGFILE=/tmp/myemail.txt

After making this change, the output has every entry listed "twice".

Here is the current code as its running:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
NOW=$(date +"%Y-%m-%d")

# Set the file names
FILE=mytest*.txt
LOGFILE=/tmp/myemail.txt

# List the directories to search. DO NOT INCLUDE THE TRAILING SLASHES
DIR=( "10 hosts are listed here" )

        if [ $NOW == $VAR2 ]; then

Right now, you have the output redirected into the output file twice.

You need to use either "| tee -a ${LOGFILE}" or ">> ${LOGFILE}" at the end of the echo commands.
