Renaming a file name using awk

I keep on getting different file names onto local directory, which I want to add a date field to it and rename like below. Incoming file names are encrypted (some pgp and some in asc), so when I use the script to decrypt it, I can use the renamed names for decryption.

incoming file names
Code:
test1.txt.pgp
test2.csv.pgp
test3.txt.asc
test4.dat.out.asc

renamed files as
Code:
test1-YYYYMMDD.txt
test2-YYYYMMDD.csv
test3-YYYYMMDD.txt
test4-YYYYMMDD.dat.out

can this be done with a single command in the script ( awk, sed.....etc...)

Thanks

Code:
#!/bin/ksh or bash or
d=$(date '+%Y%m%d')
for  line in *.pgp *.asc
do
        full=${line%.*}
        first=${full%%.*}
        end=${full#*.}
        echo "$first-$d.$end"
done

Try this, check the output first without the coloured part:
Code:
ls | awk -F\. -v d=$(date +"%Y%m%d") '
{f=$0;$1=$1 "-" d;$NF=""}{print "mv " f " " $0}
' OFS="." | sh
