bash reading and assigning

Hi,
In a script i am having trouble joining a variable to a file. for, example I read input from user as a variable a or b or c or d etc and want to join those to different files...
or
if user press a then it will open somefile.txt
if user press b then it will open otherfile.txt
any idea

read up on case... (ie, case..esac loop)

You could also use an if-then structure. What have you tried?

I tried if then...but the problem is when I read variable..let's say use give variable b as the option he want, but the file that I want to open with that do not open.
Now I am thing of delclaring varibale as numbers and then compare with if..then and try to open..
I will let you know if that workks
