How do i get only the IP part from a host call.
For example in my script i put
This echos the following
roadhaulage.com has address 86.54.98.194 roadhaulage.com mail is handled by 10 mail2.roadhaulage.com. roadhaulage.com mail is handled by 1 mail.roadhaulage.com.
But i only want the 86.54.98.194 to be returned to $server_ip
Any ideas?
This seems close
But it is returning the fourth word in each sentence so im getting
86.54.98.194handledhandled

This seems to do the trick
Do you think i should validate with regex to ensure it is a valid IP address IPv4, IPv6 or should i just trust this result. I want to use it to back up an SQL database from one of the live servers depending which one it resides on.
Most local domains use IPv4. You seem to be working locally. How is your internal network configured? Testing for the difference is mainly grepping for the existence of a colon. IPv4 addresses do not have colons.
I have searched in a variety of ways in a variety of places but have come up empty.

Hi,
My script needs to check whether the remote host is up or not.
If it is up i need to start few servers in that host or else just a notification should be sent that the remote host is down?
Could someone help me out in this?

I have been slowly working towards getting a shell window in Cygwin (and/or Gnome and/or KDE) to start up and display the last time it was opened (or sourced) similarly to how the OS X Terminal does so. As close as I've been able to get so far is the 'who' command, but I can't seem to puzzle out... (2 Replies)
