Replace all the words containing a particular pattern

Hi

Please help with this one..

I have a file...I need to replace all the words containing a particular pattern say "xyz' and replace the entire containing xyz with abc..

Before

xyzwork connect
connect xyz
disconnect raxyz

After the operation i want something like below:
abc connect

connect abc

disconnect abc

---------- Post updated at 08:03 PM ---------- Previous update was at 08:00 PM ----------

pls explain the operation also if possible...tried with sed but m runnin out of options..

Here's one way to do it with Perl -

xyzwork connect
connect xyz

$ perl -ple 's/\b\w*xyz\w*\b/abc/g' f6
abc connect
connect abc
disconnect abc
$ 
$

Using sed, I'd think it depends on how you define your "word" -

xyzwork connect
connect xyz

$ sed 's/[a-zA-Z]*xyz[a-zA-Z]*/abc/g' f6
abc connect
connect abc
disconnect abc
$ 
$
