Is there more than one computer involved, or are you getting different results between "hwclock" and "date" on the same computer?

What is the output from these commands in each environment under consideration?

locale
echo "${TZ}"

Ps. The earlier advice to use the "date" command is good.

Perhaps your version of hwclock has an option to format the date; mine (util-linux-ng 2.14.1) doesn't.

The OP doesn't want the default date format (which is what hwclock -r produces in the version I have).
