Question sed -i not working in HP unix
hi i want to append the number in each file,but when i ran this command:-
sed -i "1i 50" filename

its giving error sed: illegal option -- i in HP unix

but its working in linux.

any advice !!!!!!!!!

That's because the '-i' option (inplace editing) is only available in the GNU variant of sed. Everywhere else you'll have to use temporary files.

Or perl: "perl -i" in your searching...syntax actually emulates that used for your sed approach. (Or vice versa lest I wrankle the zealots...I'm never sure of the family tree on some things.)

is there any other method to accompolish this.ie.through awk .

with 'sed -i "1i 50" filename', what are you trying to do? I get 'command garbled' on Solaris.

in HP unix command is giving error -sed: Function 1i cannot be parsed.
is this possible through awk.

Once again, what are you trying to accomplish?
