Hey everyone,

I'm trying get a list of files using [find . -name "*.log"] but also append some data located inside the file.

The log files contain two strings that I am trying to extract. These strings are surrounded by tags.

Here is a sample log file:

notimportantinfo<DATE>20100103</DATE><ERROR>error400</ERROR>moreinfo

As you might assume, the data I need is between the DATE tag and ERROR tag. The output file would ideally be:

./logs/tday/file1.log,20100103,error400
./logs/tday/file2.log,20091103,error27
./logs/tday/file3.log,20091104,error400
and so on.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Just give a simple solution for a try first.

awk -F "<|>" '/^notimportantinfo/ {print FILENAME,$3,$7}' OFS="," ./logs/tday/*.log

Ya, I guess thats almost on the right track. However, I don't understand what you want the -F "<|>" to do. Is it supposed to be a delimiter with a wildcard? It's just acting like the character < is the only delimiter and its providing me with an output that contains part of the tag.

I ran into another problem. It seems like my files/lines are too long. I get the error "awk: record `notimportantinfo...' too long. Any work around for that?
