supress error messages

Hi

I have a script which connects to oracle using sqlplus

Code:
if ! check_sqlplus  "$ORACLE_SID" ; then
  echo "Unable to use sqlplus for sid $ORACLE_SID"
  return 1
else
  echo "attempting to connect to database"
  echo $ORACLE_HOME
  echo $ORACLE_SID
  echo "Status before entering sqlplus is $status"
  status=`$ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus -s /nolog  2>/dev/null <<EOF
  conn /as sysdba
  set pagesize 0 feedback off verify off heading off echo off
  select replace(open_mode,' ','')
  from v\\$database;
  exit;
EOF`
echo "current status is $status"
fi

The problem is if it is unable to connect it prints a error message saying
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available Process ID

Is there anyway to supress this message ?

In your script,you change the following line.

Code:
conn / as sysdba 2>/dev/null

Otherwise,you run your script as follows.

Code:
sh scripname 2>/dev/null

Then,it won't give the error.
