As you've probably figured out by now, AWK code consists of pattern and action pairs; either can be absent but not both. an absent pattern defaults to true. an absent action defaults to printing the line (aka $0). a solitary 1 is a pattern which evaluates to true, triggering the absent action which prints the line. in short, 1 triggers printing of $0 and is equivalent to
