I can kind of follow what you are doing but I dont know what some of the syntax is doing.

At some point I would like to be able to transpose scripts between ksh and bash.

Better would be to learn the standard Unix shell (a.k.a POSIX).

A pure POSIX shell, without proprietary extensions, is dash.

Once you have that under your belt, learn a shell that extends it.

"find . -printf" without prepended "." path? Getting path to current working directory?
