Sending email from Unix

I am using the following syntax to send an e-mail from Unix (Sun OS).

mail -s "hello" abc@yahoo.com

But, when I click enter after typing this command, its not exiting and after a while when I give ctrl+c it creates a dead.letter file in my $HOME dir. Can anyone please tell me, if I have to check for any other configuration to see if I could send an e-mail from my unix server or not.

The mail program is waiting for input.

Check the manpage.

Quote:
When recipients are named, mail
assumes a message is being sent. It reads from the standard input up to
an end-of-file (Control-d) or, if reading from a terminal device, until
it reads a line consisting of just a period.
Code:
$ mail -s "hello" me@somewhere.com
test
.
EOT

Code:
echo test | mail -s "hello" me@somewhere.com

There is no "-s" switch to "mail". Shouldn't we be using "mailx" ?

Code:
echo "test" | mailx -s "hello" me@somewhere.com

"mail" and "mailx" are synonyms.

mail and mailx are not synonymous in unix though some versions of SUNOS do interpret the "-s" switch.
We could do with knowing the exact Operating System version. This might even be a Berkeley SUNOS?
