Grep Help

I know this is easy for some, but I struggle to get my head around this.

I am using grep to search a file for a number in a row, but I only want to search the second column, and then later retrieve the first. Let's say I search for '92' using:
Code:
grep -w "92"

I get the following results:
Code:
00-01-c0-01-92-93 4738
00-01-c0-01-92-b2 3225
00-01-c0-01-92-bb 3516
00-01-c0-01-92-c0 3227
00-01-c0-02-9d-92 3537
00-01-c0-03-3b-92 82
00-01-c0-03-3b-96 92

But it is the last row I am after, the other 92s are part of MAC addresses, but I don't want those, I want the row with the id of 92.
What is the best way to improve the grep command so I only get the one row?

Thanks in advance,
Stephen

OK, that returns the following....
Code:
00-01-c0-03-2d-dd 3592
00-01-c0-03-38-f8 1192
00-01-c0-03-3a-50 2392
00-01-c0-03-3b-96 92
00-e0-4c-77-14-a1 292

I have tried looking through man nawk but I cannot see anything that will return just the 92 row.

Thanks,
Stephen

Aha! Yes I know I need to learn regex...this worked:
Code:
nawk '$2~/^92$/' FILE

Thanks for the pointer...

Is there a speed difference?

Hi,
simple grep '92$' INFILE also works.

Now, I do not want not hard code '92', how do I place a variable in here:
Code:
nawk '$2~/^$VARIABLE$/'

But of course this does not work.. I have tried lots of things, but no luck. Is this possible?

Stephen

Got it, it is all in the use of '
Code:
nawk '$2~/^'"$VARIABLE"'$/'
