I'm having some trouble with a bash shell script that I'm writing. In the script, I'm trying to upload a file to a backup repository using ftp, but the whole file doesn't get uploaded.

This is the file's properties at the start (I've highlighted the file size in red):

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 361624405 2010-02-01 10:54 custom-backup_1002011053.tar.gz

In the ftp repository, the file becomes:

-rw-r--r--   1 tpfsoftw tpfsoftw 360230969 Feb  1 08:57 custom-backup_1002011053.tar.gz

This is what I use to upload (in my shell script):

 ftp -in $ftp_addr <<END
    user $ftp_usrname $ftp_pwd
    put $backup_filename $backup_filename
    quit
END

If I manually upload the file (without specifying the -in options), it uploads fine.

Please can you help me with what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix this?

First inclination is to specify "binary" as the first line of the ftp commands. I suspect that is is defaulting to "ascii".
