Add a space at end of file

Hi

I guess this is very simple....

I want to add a space at the last line in a file.
The space has to be the last charachter on the last line, not at a new line.

Anyone ??

Code:
sed '$s/$/ /' file

Seriously?
Code:
printf ' ' >> file

Thanks.

Seems like the printf will do the trick, almost....

I have a newline char last in file.
I must have that space before newline.
Maybe the easiest way is to remove newline, add space, add newline ??

But how do i do that ???

Those are 2 conflicting requirements. Either the space is the last character of the file, or it's the second-to-last. It can't be both.
