Help with sed ...
can I do this using SED?


i want to print "expression", before and after the lines until it encounters

"--------------------------------------"

Your question is a bit vague.

But if you intend to get a output like

then

awk '{if ( /expression/) { print "----\n"; print $0"\n"; print "----\n";} else {print $0}} file

sorry if I wasn't clear ... here's the output that I need ...

the text before and after the expression isn't on a regular interval ...

so I need to print the expression with the lines before and after it, limited with the "--------------------------------------"

I need to find "parameter4=576" and print the lines before and after it delimited with "--------------------------------------"
so my output will be either ...

parameter6=999
--------------------------------------

i made a script to update a lot of xml files. to save me some time. Ran it and it replaced all the the files with a 0kb file.
