I don't see any problems. Have you changed the file names in open() ? Quote the file names.

Code:
open FILE1, '<', 'downloads/first_file.txt'  or die "$!";
open FILE2, '<', 'downloads/second_file.txt' or die "$!";

I got the above error from running the script.
What could be the problem and how to correct the script? Any help is appreciated.

Can you paste the first few lines of your script and first 2 or 3 lines from first_file.txt ?
