Parsing a CSV File

Hey guys,

I'm in the process of learning PHP and BASH scripting. I'm getting there, slowly Smilie

I would like some help with parsing a CSV file. This file contains a list of hostnames, dates, and either Valid, Expired, or Expired Soon in the last column.

Basically, I want to parse the file, pull out the hostname, do a dig (or something similar) and grab the actual IP address, and pull the Date. The line should be skipped if it contains 'Expired' in the last entry.

This is more of an exercise for myself, instead of actual work. I would appreciate any help with this. Smilie

I would like it to be done with either BASH or PHP, since those are the ones that I have been spending some time with.

post a sample of your file (CSV can be comma, semicolon or tab separated and values maybe quoted).
The basics :
Code:
#!/bin/bash
IFS=',' # if it is comma separated
while read HOST DATE STATUS
do
    [ "$STATUS" = "Expired" ] && continue
    # Process Host
    echo "Host: $HOST"
    # Process Date
    echo "Date: $DATE"
    # Process Status
    echo "Staus: $STATUS"
done < file.csv # The name of the file to be processed

For host, date and status processing i justa put an 'echo to see the variable value.

Thanks Frans. Here is a sample line from the file.

Code:
1,xxx.example.com,,SSL Web Server certificate-1Year,07-Nov-09,Expired

There are about 40 more lines like that.

6 fields. What do you want to do with each of them ?
like in my example, you can begin writing (or copy - paste - modify) the script but with 6 variables in the read statement.

OK this is a good start.

I only need the Host, Date, and Status fields (1st, 2nd, and 3rd columns, respectfully).

I would like the output to be comma separated values as well.

Also, the script does not seem to be skipping the entries that contain the "Expired" string.

Another thing I would like (may be too involved) is to do a dig or ping on the hostname and pull the IP and put it in a new column.

This is a good start though, thank you.

Can you post the part of script you've already done.

Well, I was using the example you posted. I haven't really changed anything except for the file that it reads.

The script outputs
Host:
Date:
Status:

which is good, I just want to know how to avoid printing the entries that say expired in the status field.

Edit: I figured out why it wasn't catching the "expired" entries. It was because of quotes already being in the CSV, so I had to add an extra set in and escape the inside quotes.

How can I output the entries in CSV format?
