running cron -newbie

First of all Im not sure if this is the correct forum (sorry if it isn't), secondly my unix knowledge is minimal - I started reading up on cron yesterday!

I have an asterisk box which I want ro set to reboot at midnight each day.
I understand that the way to do this is to set a crontab with the entry :

0 0 * * * root reboot

My problem is that I cant get to edit the crontab file.

when I initially started I typed

crontab -e

and got the message " chdir(/var/spool/cron/crontabs): No such file or directory"

I then typed :

mkdir var/spool/cron
mkdir var/spool/cron/crontabs

and now when I type crontab -e I get the message "crontab: fork: Function not implemented"

if I type find /var/spool/cron I can see an entry called crontab.30056 (which was not there before.

I have checked ps -av and cron is running, can anyone see where I am going wrong?

Thanks.

What system are you on (you can check with uname -a)? Because the errors you're getting indicate a serious problem with cron itself.
