Error Removing a file from the tar

Hi All,
I have a tar file abc.tar with the contents
1.txt
2.txt
3.txt
Now I want to remove 2.txt from abc.tar. Can I know what is the command to be used to remove a file from the tar.

A tape archive is a stream, you can't arbitrarily edit the middle of it. You'll need to recreate the archive without adding 2.txt to it.

I think the OP means extract a file

Code:
tar -x ./2.txt -f abc.tar

The ./ part (you may need to change it) has to match what tar -tf abc.tar shows for the filename

Check the --delete option of GNU tar in the manual page.

Code:
$
$
$ # list the files in the tar
$ tar tf abc.tar
1.txt
2.txt
3.txt
4.txt
$
$ # delete 2.txt from the tar
$ # the "--delete" option works ONLY for the GNU version of tar
$ # and it works ONLY with archives on disk
$ # and it DOES NOT work with archives stored on magnetic tape
$
$ tar --delete --file=abc.tar 2.txt
$
$ # now list the files in the tar again
$ tar tf abc.tar
1.txt
3.txt
4.txt
$
$
