new line suppression

Hi I wrote this,
to write 0.0000e+00 whenver there is a 1 in a string

Code:
                    string=$4
                    cnt=${#string}
                    for ((k=0;k<cnt;k++)); do
                        if [ ${4:k:1} = 1 ]; then
                            printf "0.0000e+00\t"
                        fi
                    printf "\n" >> $3

but I get a newline at every printf.
So I get
Code:
0.0000e+00

0.0000e+00

when I would like simply

Code:
0.0000e+00	0.0000e+00

Where is the closing done for your for loop? After printf "\n" >> $3? And what is $3 declared as? It would be easier if you post all relevant code and a sample of input data.

Thank you I missed the done before the second printf.
I didn't post it all because it's more than 100 lines!
