Java file count in tar
How do i get the number of files present in a tar file using the shell script??

One solution that i tried was to untar the file, do a listing of files, get the count and delete the files and print the count. I am facing the performance issues since the tar has many files.

Any better solution ??

the -t option lists files in an archive, so this might be what you want
Code:
tar -tf myarchive.tar | wc -l

The only downside is that if there are lots of directories in the archive they will inflate the count.

I suppose to that end, you could replace wc -l with

Do I need to extract the entire tar file to confirm the tar folder is fine?
