$0 scope in function and calling script

That looks a bit different than what I get. How about:
cksum /bin/ksh

I get:
1289670036 209128 /bin/ksh

You did not get locale libraries linked into your ksh. When I type "locale" I see a bunch of locale envirorment variables. What do you get? These variables come from a file called /etc/default/init.

Also, what command are you using to invoke your test script? Modify it to have a "ps -f" in it as the first command inside afunc and rerun it.

That is certainly an old kernel you have there! I get

My guess is that you have not installed the recommended patch bundle on this box after the OS was installed. I would do that and see if I still have a problem.

Be careful about using $0 in ksh script functions
which are intended to be portable across various
Unices.

For example, on HP-UX $0 in a function works
but on HP Tru64 UNIX $0 in a function does not
work.
