hello
either ping the server as told by the others.
or do
Code:
telnet hostname 80

where hostname=www.your-site.com
and 80 is the port no. where most of the webservers listen at port no. 80
if you dont get a response its down.
Otherwise if you get a shell without a prompt. then its up.
regards.

This is a pretty standard way of discarding all output. What it means is that stdout get directed to /dev/null. and stderr (signified by the number 2) gets sent to where stdout (signified by the number 1) is pointing to. /dev/null is a special file that discards any data that get sent to it ..

Did you use all the statement including the if .. then part to see if www.google.gnorky is up and running? Does you host have access to the Internet and a dns server?

MySQL

Hi scrutinizer

How should I modify the command for a web page which need user authentication like username and password.
The code which you gave was working fine with www.google.gnorky
but its not giving any response for http://www.google.com

That means that Google is up and running. OK I thought you only wanted to do something if the site was down. You could try this:

Code:
website="www.google.gnorky"
if wget --spider $website >/dev/null 2>&1; then
echo Now I should send an email about $website being up
else
echo Now I should send an email about $website being down
fi
