Question Replace 10 characters in file

Hi,

I need to replace 10 characters string (21-30) in a file with another string.

I tried using cut command, i am able get these 10 charaters, but do not know how to replace them inside the file.

for example file content(these are alphanumeric characters):
aaaaa12345bbbbb12345ccccc12345ddddd12345eeeee12345

cut -c 21-30 filename

Any Help?

using bash
Code:
sub="0123456789"  # ten characters
while read record
do
   echo ${record:0:19}${sub}${record:29}
done < inputfile > outputfile

The syntax is ${stringSmilieos:length} - pos starts counting from 0.

One way to do it with Perl:

Code:
$
$ cat f6
aaaaa12345bbbbb12345ccccc12345ddddd12345eeeee12345
$ perl -i.bak -pe 'substr($_,20,10)="0123456789"' f6
$ cat f6
aaaaa12345bbbbb123450123456789ddddd12345eeeee12345
$
$ # A copy of the original file - "f6" is saved in "f6.bak"
$
