Extracting certain data from a sentence

How do I delete text in each line from the first character up to a certain pattern, ie. 'qmuser.' and then delete from the next occurence of a dot to the end of the sentence

For example: -
LTSB Renewal Notice Travel Pack --- d \qmaster\spool1\qmuser.8664_LM245_20031216094308.ps.0

From this line of text I just what to return '8664_LM245_20031216094308'

I've tried using Sed, but I guess I'm not doing it correctly

sed 's/.*qmuser\.\([^\.]*\).*/\1/' $FILE

What about...?

Rather then deleting until the end of the sentence after the pattern. Is it possible to delete from the pattern the next occurence of a : (colon)?

sed 's/.*qmuser\.\([^\.]*\)[^:]*/\1/' $FILE

Okay I know I'm a pain

The sed statement works wonders...how can I...

I've now got the file name returned, but how can I precede this with 'temp_'

This...
'8664_LM245_20031216094308'

becomes

'temp_8664_LM245_20031216094308'

I've tried messing around with the sed statement, but it just returned temp_.

Just keep messing around and I'm sure you'll get there ...

sed 's/.*qmuser\.\([^\.]*\)[^:]*/temp_\1/' $FILE
