Script to take a word and reverse it

Hi, I am looking for some help and this is my first post so hopefully I will get this right.

I have been asked to write a script which when run asks the user to input a word. once they have inputed there choosen word (This can be anything) I need to echo to screen there choosen word in reverse.

A example would be

Apple (would be entered)

then

elppA (would be echo'd to screen)

Code:
$ echo "Apple" |awk 'BEGIN {FS=OFS=""} {for (i=NF;i>=1;i--) {printf $i}}'
elppA

Firstly Thank you for you speedy response. However the word that is echo'd to the screen is still Apple it is not reversing for some reason.

I am not sure if this matters but I am using a Bourne shell I believe its a sh it that makes any differnce

perl -e 'print "Enter word to reverse:\n";chomp(my $in=<STDIN>);print reverse(split'',$in)."\n";'

don't need the split, actually...

perl -e 'print "Enter word to reverse:\n";chomp(my $in=<STDIN>);print reverse($in)."\n";'

Or using the unix command "rev".

Code:
#!/bin/ksh
echo "Enter word to reverse: \c"; read MYWORD
DROWYM=`echo "${MYWORD}" | rev`
echo "Reversed word is : ${DROWYM}"
