I need to write a script that will allow me to copy data from one position in a line to another position while changing the first 2 bytes of the data to a constant. Here is an example of a line of data before and what it needs to look like after. there are about 200 lines in the file.

I'm looking for a way to read a text file that may contain 1000 records or more and each of these records has 460 characters. I need to read each record, and add a string of characters starting at position 256 for each record. Any suggestions using UNIX shell scripting. (4 Replies)

So, I want to read line-by-line a text file with unknown number of files....
So:
a=1
b=1
while ; do
b=`sed -n '$ap' test`
a=`expr $a + 1`
$here do something with b etc
done
the problem is that sed does not seem to recognise the $a, even when trying
sed -n ' $a p'
