My reply was to explan to J-DUB why directories were still displayed - it was not intended to question your post.

If you use this, the first line will be the 'ls' header "total XXXX".
And you're right about the awk '!/^d/...'. But it's intended to be used with the sed, in which case the total should never be displayed.
