From the passwd man page:

username:password:uid:gid:gcos-field:home-dir:login-shell

uid

is the user's unique numerical ID for the system.

Also note that getuid() returns a uid_t and the types man page tells us that uid_t is a long or an int depending on if we are in 32 bit or 64 bit mode. The limits man page tells us the value for UID_MAX.

Behavior like that is mandated by Posix. If you have non-integer uids, you are not using unix.

No, you are right, they are not unix uid's, but LDAP uid's!!
