Return Number of Substitutions made by SED?

Hi guys,

Is there any way this can be done, or return whether any substitutions have been made?

thanks for any input.

No way of getting the information from "sed" itself.
To find out whether the file has changed, try running "cksum" on the file before and after and compare the results.

Use awk instead, The return value from gsub is the number of substitutions made:

Code:
{ num += gsub( pattern, "string" ) }
END { print num }
