make a variable read the value from the standard input
Hi,

In Perl, how can we define a variable make it read the value from the standard input? Meaning, how can have the user type in the value that will be assigned to the variable?

Easy. You use the STDIN file handle. For example:

Code:
$scalar_variable = <STDIN>;
chomp $scalar_variable;

# 3

Sed does not make changes in the file but to the standard output

I have an xml file. I am doing some change, say deleting line 770. File name is file.xml. I use: sed '770d' file.xml but this does not actually make changes in the *file* but shows the changes on standard output (screen) if i use $var=`sed '770d' file.xml` echo $var > file.xml this... (3 Replies)

How to copy from standard input

I tried copy the output files from find command into a directory. Example, find / -name core 2>/dev/null | xargs cp???? I have known that we can use xargs to execute command lines from standard input but how to use it in this case. Or I can do something besides xargs. (2 Replies)
