comparing awk and nawk

Hi Guys,

i tried these two commands. First in awk and nawk.
The nawk command is running fine but the awk command is throwing error.

What is wrong with the awk command. There are lot of awk commands running fine in my system

Code:
d003:/usr/local/dsadm/dsprod>nawk 'NR = 1 {print " "$0}' a.txt
 51|326|jsdjls
d003:/usr/local/dsadm/dsprod>awk 'NR = 1 {print " "$0}' a.txt
awk: syntax error near line 1
awk: bailing out near line 1

Thanks for your help.

Hi.

I can't see anything wrong with the syntax.

But your logic is wrong.

Code:

awk 'NR = 1 {print " "$0}' a.txt

Will set NR to 1, and evaluate to true for every record.

Correct would be:
Code:

awk 'NR == 1 {print " "$0}' a.txt

Or just:
Code:
awk 'NR==1' a.txt

The code suggests a space is required at the start.

Hi.

For stuff like this, sed. It's quicker than awk if nothing else (although for only changing 1 line, the difference is neglegable)
