"wc -c" question

"wc -c" question
when I enter the command "echo adam | wc -c" 5 gets outputted to the screen.

adam = 4 characters

I dont understand why it wouldnt be 4?

Check this out:

$ echo adam | od -c
0000000 a d a m \n
0000005

You can see that echo is appending a newline.

UNIX is like that. I used to just sit and run through man pages all day and look in /usr/bin and /sbin to try to learn what everything did. It's like discovering the ultimate puzzle. Just when you think it is solved, there's something more to find.

i want to print this four lines continously from this 1089lines file & replace the last line digit with 0 or 1.i am working on solaris 9. can u help me???????????
