Does anyone know of a way that I can use the echo command to create a temporary file, but I need to maintain all leading and trailing blanks. I have a script that read tthe contents of a master file and creates temp file with a subset of data from the master, but I need to retain the format. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Whatever variable you are using to hold your data.... place it in quotes when you call echo. If you just say
then echo is just going to see a list of arguments and it's going to separate them by a single blank.
If you say
then echo gets a single string argument and it will be as you expect it.
Let me be more specific, I am using the following:
$1 is a flat file with lines like:
Leading blanks and the $ shows the end of the line. I wanted to preserve the format when I create the stub.out file. But all leading and trailing blanks are removed and I get:
Thanks for your previous reply.

Reason: code tags, PLEASE!

To keep the forums high quality for all users, please take the time to format your posts correctly.
First of all, use Code Tags when you post any code or data samples so others can easily read your code. You can easily do this by highlighting your code and then clicking on the # in the editing menu. (You can also type code tags
and
by hand.)
Second, avoid adding color or different fonts and font size to your posts. Selective use of color to highlight a single word or phrase can be useful at times, but using color, in general, makes the forums harder to read, especially bright colors like red.
Third, be careful when you cut-and-paste, edit any odd characters and make sure all links are working property.

I came across and unexpected behavior with redirections in tcsh. I know, csh is not best for redirections, but I'd like to understand what is happening here.

echo Redirected to STDOUT > /dev/stdout

echo `echo ` doesn't echoes anything. And it's logic. But
echo `echo `echo ` ` does echoes "echo". What's the logic of it? the `echo `echo ` inside of the whole (first) echo, echoes nothing, so the first echo have to echo nothing but echoes "echo"
(too much echoing :P):o (2 Replies)

So in my shell i execute:
{ while true; do echo string; sleep 1; done } | read line This waits one second and returns.
But
