uncompess .gz file

Dear Friends,

I have the following file
file1.pdf
file2.pdf
in unix..

I want to compress these two files into one file and decompress the same back..

For compressing these two files into one file I used the following command and it worked..

gzip -c file1.pdf file2.pdf > temp.gz

Please advice me to uncompress the same temp.gz and I want the same file1.pdf and file2.pdf when I compress temp.gz

gunzip didn't worked somehow..please advice!

You want to use unzip.

A better overall approach is to tar the files into a tar file, compress it, then later uncompress the one tar file and extract the file(s) you want.
example
Code:
tar -cvf my.tar file1 file2 # put files in tar archive
gzip my.tar # this makes my.tar.gz
# later on ...
gunzip my.tar.gz # makes my.tar
tar -xvf my.tar file1 # recreates file1
tar -xvf mt.tar # extracts ALL files in my.tar

Hi.

From the man page:

Code:
If you wish to create a single archive file with multiple members so that members can later
be extracted independently, use an archiver such as tar or zip.

Did you read Gzip User's Manual ?
Code:
NAME
     gzip -- compression/decompression tool using Lempel-Ziv coding (LZ77)
....
OPTIONS
     The following options are available:
.......
     -c, --stdout, --to-stdout
This option specifies that output will go to the stan-
dard output stream, leaving files intact.

     -d, --decompress, --uncompress
This option selects decompression rather than compres-
		       sion.
