search a pattern and replace the whole line
Hi All,

I have a requirement where I have to find a pattern in a file and comment the whole line containing the search pattern. Any ideas in shell is welcome.

Try this:

Thanks Franklin,

However I have a doubt here. What is the importance of "." here. When I tried the *pattern* it did not worked, but when I tried with .*pattern.* it worked fine for me. This will help my understanding of sed.

. Matches any single character.
* Matches any number (including zero) of the single character (including a character specified by a regular expression) that immediately precedes it.

Google for regular expression examples.
