I still cannot figure out how to get this read command to work. I want the script to ask questions when prompted, and the user to enter a response. Based on response it will continue or exit. I want to take input from user on linux console...but i dont wnt it to be visible.. just like we type password for ssh or scp

How can i have a user input that reads like this:

echo $a

right now i have divided it into two echos, like
echo -n "a: "

Here is my script:

read varone
echo "$varone"
When I run in via ksh the script runs successfully.
However when I run it via tcsh I get "varone: Undefine variable"
