how to copy one string in ksh into another

Hi
Does anybody know if there is a utility/command in ksh which would allow to copy/insert the contents of one string into certain positions of the other?

for example:
A=" ABCDEF "
B="HHH"

I need to insert contents of string "B" into string "A" from position 3 to 5, so the resulting string would look like this :

A=" HHH ABCDEF "

Thanks a lot for any advice... -A

Code:
#!/bin/ksh
A=' ABCDEF '
B='HHH'

A=" ${B}${A}"

echo "A->[${A}]"

Written for bash, but modified slightly so it should work in ksh93:

Code:
function _overlay #@ USAGE: _overlay STRING SUBSTRING START
{                 #@ RESULT: in $_OVERLAY
  typeset string=$1
  typeset sub=$2
  typeset start=$3
  typeset left right
  left=${string:1:start-1}
  right=${string:start+${#sub}-1}
  _OVERLAY=$left$sub$right
}

A="            ABCDEF        "
B=HHH

_overlay "$A" "$B" 3
A=$_OVERLAY
