Data Urgent!! : How to read very long line using shell script
I have to fix files with only one huge line. Basically this line contains huge number of records may be in thousands of fix length. Suppose if we consider the length of one record as 100 bytes and if we have 50 such record. Then the file will have only one line with 100*50 bytes.

I want to fix each record. How can I do it in shell script. I tried to use sed but I am afraid if it overflows the buffer because of huge line. Is there any utility in shell? I am ok with awk and pearl. But I am not sure this can be done in awk and pearl. Please kindly let me know.

Basically I want to replace integer string with its binary equivalent. Meaning in my record on specified position if I getting “12” I want to replace this with its binary equivalent.

Please kindly let me know.

You can use perl, see sysopen() and sysread() for details.
