I want to add the entries below variable SUM and put result in that place of SUM.

The file contains more then 1000 line in this format.

Can some one help me creating a script for it.

Thanks in advance

This replaces SUM (6th column as far as awk is concerned, not fifth) with the sum of the lines above, then zeroes sum and starts again.
Code:
awk 'BEGIN {sum=0}
      {if($6=="SUM") { $6=sum; sum=0}
        print $0;
        sum+=$6 }' oldfile > newfile

Not tested.

Jim Thanks

But in my case the 6th column will not contain the value "sum" it will be an empty field.

What you show is six columns in your file with a space as a field separator. You need to work out what the field separator is - a space? a tab? then change awk to
awk -F'my field sep char goes here' .... rest of awk.

I tried with space as my delimiter, but it is of no help ..

borrowing from jim:
Code:
awk '
      {if(NF < 6) { $6=sum; sum=0}
        print $0;
        sum+=$6 }' oldfile > newfile

Still no luck, it thorw's the same output as the source file.

I will explain my requirement once again,

I have report which contains report from my backup server it has six columns and more then 1000 rows.If the 6th column is empty then i need to sum all the values in 6th column starting from very next row, put the result in that empty place.

I have attached a jpeg which can explain more clearly i guess..
