i am producing txt outputs of archives created by our tsm software.
problem is some of these files are too large to open in excel so i can despatch.
here is a example of the output

TAG_460 /prod_bak 7 FILE /ARCHIVE/Whistles- 14182-001.tif 169771323 2009-05-19 root Archive Date: DEFAULT 17:02:44.000000 05/19/2009
TAG_460 /prod 7 FILE /ARCHIVE/Whistles- 14212-001.tif 169771325 2009-05-19 root Archive Date: DEFAULT 17:02:47.000000 05/19/2009
TAG_460 /cmd 7 FILE /ARCHIVE/Whistles- 14290-001.tif 169771327 2009-05-19 root Archive Date: DEFAULT

what i want to do is extract from the output the files that have been generated from one of the fields eg prod/cmd/prod_bak then out put these as seperate files so i can filter better

i am wondering if there is a way of extarcting the info from the file using awk or some other unix querey from a txt file which is tab delimited

check out the man pages of cut , awk,sed to delimite tab .
if you can post exact code and desired out put it will help

Excel (2007) can take only 1 million raw's so if you have more than 1 million raw's you can split them by using the command

Code:

split -(put num. of raws you want in new file) file.txt.
