Error unknown test operator
hi all, i am using the below command in my script

if [ `echo $line | grep -i "PATTERN"` ]; then

This statement is causing the problme "ScriptName.ksh[51]: XXX-XXX: unknown test operator"

could you please suggest me , how can i avoid these messages.

"if" command is used for condition checking. In this case, there is nothing to check with "if" command. Hence its ended with unknown test operator.

how to overcome this situation

you can do some thing like this:

if `echo $line | grep -i "PATTERN"`
then
bla bla
else
bla bla
fi

this works in KSH.

i chnaged the statement if [ `echo $line | grep -i "PATTERN"` ];
to if `echo $line | grep -i "PATTERN"` ; but this is not working

Ok do this

Code:
echo $line | grep -i "PATTERN"
if [ $? -eq -0 ]
then
bla bla
else
bla bla
fi

this solution is working, but i dont want to display messages to screen ...

I have gotten the script up to this point and it works fine a system but when i copy it to another unix server running solaris 9 as the original one , its gives an error './mon_fs.sh: 0: unknown test operator' .
