renaming multiple files simultaneously

Hi ,

I have a large no of files which all end in .asp.htm extension .

But for proper navigation between the pages I need to rename all those files as .asp only .

How can it be done ?

Try (ksh):
Code:
ls *asp.htm|sed -e "s/.htm$//"|xargs -i ksh -c 'mv {}.htm {}'

Try this first:

Code:
for f in *.asp.htm; do f2=`basename $f .htm`; echo "$f -> $f2"; done

Does the output look right? If so, do this...

Code:
for f in *.asp.htm; do f2=`basename $f .htm`; echo "$f -> $f2"; mv $f $f2; done

WARNING: this will not handle files that have spaces in their names. Make sure you have none of those before running the above.

If u want to handle spaces just:
Code:
ls *asp.htm|sed -e "s/.htm$//"|xargs -i ksh -c 'mv "{}.htm" "{}"'

Yes very good point. Why else would you bother setting up so many subshells and using xargs, if you weren't at least going to protect the spaces Smilie
