Help with expect script

Hello all. I've cobbled together a script (using expect) that to put configs from our switches and routers up on a tftp server. The script works fine, but I'd like to make it more extendable. Unfortunately I'm still at about the hello world scripting stage...

The script ssh's into a device into a server and sends the backup config to a tftp server. Right now it works for switches, but I'd like to re-use the script for multiple device types (IE a switch, router, and anything else I need it for). I'd also like to add some sort of error checking and loging/reporting.

The variables are fairly self explanatory. type is the device type (switch, router, etc), and path is the path on the tftp server (unused). My idea with the type variable is to choose the expect script based on the device type. I've never used expect before and am not sure if all code could be in one script, or if I would need 2 scripts.

For example:
Code:
if $type is switch
   do switch expect script
if $type is router
   do router expect script
else
tell me to choose an appropriate type or end script.

Right now I have just 2 devices and the syntax goes
<code>/usr/bin/expect [username] [password] [device_hostname] [switch/router] [path_on_tftp_server] </code>

Here's what I have that works for the switches. I really just need to know how to use the $type variable to switch the expect script to run the correct info and would love to see better use of it.

Code:
#!/usr/bin/expect

set user [lindex $argv 0]
set password [lindex $argv 1]
set hostname [lindex $argv 2]
set type [lindex $argv 3]
set path [lindex $argv 4]
set tftphost 192.168.230.19

spawn ssh -o stricthostkeychecking=no $user@$hostname
expect "password: "
send "$password\r"
expect "continue*"
send "\r"
expect "> "
send "enable\r"
expect "Name: "
send "$user\r"
expect "Password: "
send "$password\r"
expect "# "
send "copy startup-config tftp $tftphost /configs/switches/$hostname.config\r"

send "exit\r"
expect "> "
send "exit\r"

expect "n]? "
send "y"

exit 0
