Add value of each row when each row has different data ype

Guys -- I am noob and I am really strugging on this one. I cant even write the pseudo code for it. I have a file that spits values in individual rows as such:

file:

user date type size

joe 2005-25-09 log 1
joe 2005-25-09 snd 10
joe 2005-25-09 rcd 12
joe 2005-24-09 log 2
joe 2005-24-09 snd 13
joe 2005-24-09 rcd 9
joe 2005-23-09 log 1
joe 2005-23-09 snd 11
joe 2005-23-09 rcd 5

and I want to add the values up.

desired output:

Total days 3
Total snd = sum of snd
Total rcd = sum of rcd
Total log = sum of log

how to accomplish this?

below perl code may help you some

Code:
open $fh,"<","a.txt";
while(<$fh>){
	my @tmp=split;
	$hash{$tmp[1]}=1;
	$h1{$tmp[2]}+=$tmp[3];
}
my @tmp=keys %hash;
print "Total days: ",$#tmp+1,"\n";
foreach $key (keys %h1){
	print "Total of $key: $h1{$key}\n";
}
