I have a file which contains multiple lines like this:

n333 333 sparc newyork first nyall trading
n294 294 sparc newyork nyall trading trad second

I am doing 'grep' on the first field (ex: n333) and need to find the way to assign the value "first" or "second" to my variable. For example:

wave=`grep n333 my_file | egrep 'first|second' ......` etc...

The problem is that I cannot use 'awk' since the words "first" and "second" can be in different places of the line. (in my example above it is #5 on the first line and #8 on the second line)

Is there a way to do it? Thanks a lot for any help or advice -A

# Do something with $one and $two

Franklin, thanks a lot for the fast reply, the only problem with this is that I do not know the position of the words "first" and "second" on the line:

This is the example of the output after running the command:
sundev5$ grep n333 bbcpu.lst | awk '/^n333/{s=$5;getline;print s, $8;exit}'
nyall

At least you have to know the positions or fields on the lines. Btw it's unnecessary to use grep with awk.
