shell script

dear experts,
as i am very new to the shell scripting facing some problem,
i have one script which creates a directory
mkdir -p /user/001_case1

my question is whenever i execute this command from same directory it should create 001_case2 for second iteration,
001_case3 for third iteration, after checking whether these directories are present or not, iteration here means when i execute again here,
when i change my pwd(present working directory) it should start from 001_case1 how this can be achieved in shell script , especially in linux later even this has to be modified for windows,

my main question is that how to keep track the count that this script got executed these many times from this pwd.

please suggest and help me.

Dear experts ,
i got the solution for this problem i am using nested ifs which is going to solve this problem now my question is

if that particular directory does not exist i have to create 5 sub directories for ex:
Code:
here the sub directories are same only variable is directory name.
mkdir -p $DIR/sub1
mkdir -p $DIR/sub2
mkdir -p $DIR/sub3
mkdir -p $DIR/sub4
mkdir -p $DIR/sub5

mkdir -p $DIR1/sub1
mkdir -p $DIR1/sub2
mkdir -p $DIR1/sub3
mkdir -p $DIR1/sub4
mkdir -p $DIR1/sub5

if [ -d "$DIR" ]; then
          echo "dir=$DIR exists"
             if [ -d "$DIR1" ]; then
              echo "dir1=$DIR1 exists"
           else
//all the mkdir will come here
               echo "$DIR does not exist"
              fi

        else
//all the mkdir will come here
          echo "$DIR2 does not exist"
         fi

so here if the directory does not exist it has to create all those but here the subdirectories are same for a given directory only directory name is variable so how best we can optimize it so that repeating the same statements can be reduced please inform.
still how best we can combine those mkdir statements into a variable by keeping $DIR as varying

Code:
for DIR in foo bar root; do
  for SUBDIR in sub1 sub2 sub3 sub4 sub5; do
    mkdir -p ${DIR}/${SBDIR} 2>/devnull
  done
done

Making a directory that already exist is not a problem you just get an error message saying so, so just through them away with the 2>/dev/null, keeps the script simple!

thank you very much for your inputs
but this code
Code:
for DIR in foo bar root; do
  for SUBDIR in sub1 sub2 sub3 sub4 sub5; do
    mkdir -p ${DIR}/${SBDIR} 2>/devnull
  done
done

will create entire directory structure at once but i want a directory to be created on one iteration or execution not at once how that is possible
when inially i execute it should create general and next time case next time case2 etc like that on command execution.

What should happen when you delete one of these directories? Suppose there is ./dir1 and ./dir2 and you delete ./dir2. Should the script recreate ./dir2 or should it create ./dir3? What if there is a ./dir2 and ./dir3 but no ./dir1?

The following script will create ./dir<n> where <n> is the lowest possible number:

Code:
#! /bin/ksh

typeset -i iCnt=0

while [ -d ./dir$iCnt ] ; do
     (( iCnt += 1 ))
done
mkdir ./dir$iCnt

exit $?

I hope this helps.

i think they just want the next directory created one at a time per script invocation.
through cron daily or something....

try this:

Code:
cd /usr
/bin/ls -ltd 001_case* | head -1 | read latest

#----------------------------------------------------------------------#
# Isolate number. #
#----------------------------------------------------------------------#
num=${latest##001_case}

#----------------------------------------------------------------------#
# Increment. #
#----------------------------------------------------------------------#
(( num += 1 ))

#----------------------------------------------------------------------#
# Make next directory. #
#----------------------------------------------------------------------#
mkdir -p /user/001_case$num
