Hi,

I have a file in the following format

<String>sabcdef</String>
<String>predfxc</String>
<String>fhcbgn</String>

I used the following command to get the output in this format
sabcdef
predfxc
fhcbgn

awk ' {print saveit substr($0,9,7)}' ids.txt.

However, awk is appending '<' at the end of last string fhcbgn.

I am trying to use the following command to get rid of it
awk '{sub(/</," ");print}' ids1.txt

I am getting the following error
awk: syntax error near line 1
awk: illegal statement near line 1

Appreciate if someone can point out my mistake.

Thanks for the reply.

I think with the command you posted i have to pass the string from which the character needs to be removed.

I actually have a file with entried of the type

<Strings>sjjdhaf</String>

Some of them are 7 characters and some of them are 6 characters. So i want to scan through the file and get an output of sjjdhaf and if the string is 6 characters have the trailing character removed.


Appreciate any help with this.

It was my bad. I tried the command you sent me from the example, but was not getting any output. Just realised that i was using the wrong input file. Sorry about that.
